Guasha

Have you heard about guasha? Gua means "to rub," and describes the repeated "press strokes" applied to the treatment area. Sha is the term for the red rash-like dots called transitory therapeutic petechiae that arise as a result of the gua scraping.

Guasha provides an immediate and extended anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and immuno-protective effect. It resolves spasms and pain, and promotes normal circulation to the muscles, tissues and organs.

Some common conditions treated with guasha are respiratory conditions such as cough, asthma and COPD; musculoskeletal conditions such as tennis elbow and neck pain; digestive problems such as bloating, constipation and IBS; in addition to stress, insomnia, inflammation, chronic fatigue, scars, and more.

After treatment, clients are advised to drink plenty of water and keep the affected area protected from wind, cold and direct sun until the sha fades.

Important contraindications: Guasha is not for you if you are currently on blood thinners. Guasha is also not to be applied to active chemo/radiation patients 48 hours before or 24 hours after their chemo/radiation therapy. Guasha is also strictly contraindicated for clients who are actively receiving or have undergone any form of lymphatic cancer treatment, including surgery.

Curious to try this out? I offer 30min sessions, and would love to work on you with my trusty metal spoon.

Please note that I recommend you consult your healthcare provider prior to making a guasha appointment. Facial guasha is not offered at this time.
